Swirling just short of Category 5 status the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with winds of near 155 mph is hurricane Jimena, bearing down on the Mexican peninsula of Baja California. not only are the high winds expected to hit by the evening of September the first but also there is the likelihood of up to 12 inches of rain.
This sheer amount of rainfall in such a short period of time is likely to cause some major flodding over quite large areas.
ON MOnday the 31st August, Mexican authorities including military and police urged people to leave local resorts and flee to safety. There has been a substantial amount of displacement to minimize injury and hopefully cut any fatalities to zero.
So Where Is Jimena Heading Now?
The storm is expected to hit the resort town of Cabo San Lucas on the evening of Tuesday 1st. But the storm will affect a much larger area. A warning has gone out to the west coast of the Baja peninsula to Puerto San Andresito and east to the city of Loreto. If you reside in or near these areas you should have received advice fom local authorities or if you are staying as a tourist in this resort, seek your tour operator or Hotel management to find plans of safety or evacuation.
One small piece of good that is expected from hurricane Jimena is that the excessive rainfall will ease the drought in north-western Mexico as well as perhaps increase some water level in southern Arizona and New Mexico.
